General Information about FPVortex™

FPVortex™ is a general purpose, unstructured grid computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow solver, developed and marketed by Flow Parametrics, LLC. The code has successfully been applied to design problems in the aerospace propulsion industry, automotive industry, industrial power generation industry, and other market sectors. The code has been used to solve aerodynamics and combustion problems, including both internal and external flows, and at flow speeds ranging from low Reynolds number laminar flows, to supersonic flows with shock waves.

FPVortex™ flow solutions provide design engineers and scientists with detailed understanding of complex flow fields, leading to design and performance improvements in many types of flow devices.

FPVortex™ is targeted at PC computing hardware, although Unix versions of the code can be made available for special purposes. The code is easily coupled with commercially available pre- and post-processing tools, which together form an exceptionally cost-effective solution to complex, large-scale flow simulation problems.

FPVortex™ has benefitted from technical support provided by The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which has a substantial effort in computation and simulation of propulsion system flow fields and related technologies. NASA is transferring this technology to U.S. companies through the expertise of Flow Parametrics, LLC.

The Technology

The FPVortex™ code was developed to provide aerospace design engineers a state-of-the-art computational combustion dynamics capability that meets combustor designer requirements for geometric model accuracy, turnaround time for cases, and solution accuracy. These goals have been achieved, and the code has been well received by users not just in the aerospace industry, but several other industries as well.

FPVortex™ utilizes computer aided design (CAD) tools for geometry creation of solid models, advanced automated mesh generators for creating solid model representations (a common framework for structural, thermal and fluid flow analyses) and powerful tools for post-processing and for parallel processing. This utilization in conjunction with a robust solver drastically reduces time and costs in the design cycle.

Flow Parametrics, LLC and NASA have signed a Space Act Agreement (SAA) for sharing of advanced technologies. Flow Parametrics, LLC markets the FPVortex™ code, and provides training and support services. Certain features of FPVortex™ executables may be subject to United States Export Control Laws.
